Su Kartal (1995, Ankara - Turkey)
I hold a Master’s degree in Industrial Design at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague (KABK), and work at the intersection of art and design. My work challenges design’s traditional role as an “ultimate problem solver” by incorporating the emotional and reflective qualities of art into the process.
My minor in cinema honed me ability analyze and question the decisions embedded in both design objects and cinematic scenes. This experience led me adopt storytelling as a critical tool in my work. Through projects like The Things We Sleep On, I explore narratives and ways of living that across the borders of what is typically included in design practice. My goal is not to prescribe a singular understanding of life but to invite reflection and illuminate the neglected narrations. By combining elements of, art, design and theory, I strive to create work that resonates on a more personal level.
I see design as a comprehensive language for making sense of complex societal issues. Through my practice, I have learned to balance detailed analysis with broader contextual understanding. I am searching for ways to move between analysis and practice seamlessly.
